Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is APNG?
  • Animated Portable Network Graphics (APNG) is a file format which extends the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) specification to permit animated images that work similarly to animated GIF files, while supporting 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency not available for GIFs. It also retains backward compatibility with non-animated PNG files. The first frame of an APNG file is stored as a normal PNG stream, so most standard PNG decoders are able to display the first frame of an APNG file. The frame speed data and extra animation frames are stored in extra chunks (as provided for by the original PNG specification). APNG competed with Multiple-image Network Graphics (MNG), a comprehensive format for bitmapped animations which was created by the same team as PNG and is obsolete. APNG's advantage was the smaller library size and compatibility with older PNG implementations. In a comparison made between GIF, APNG and lossless WebP, APNG had the lowest file size.

  • Can I change the background colour to a different one?
  • Yes, click on "Select Background" option or enter the custom (HEX) code in the input box. For example, #000000 for black and #FFFFFF for white.

  • Is it possible to create an animated PNG from an lottie animation?
  • Yes, your lottie animation should have animation on elements. You can control the frame rate of animation and loop for output animated PNG.

  • Is it possible to create a transparent APNG from Lottie animation?
  • Absolutely yes, click on the option "Make Background Transparent*". An APNG, Animated Portable Network Graphic, supports 24-bit color as well as 24-bit transparency, creating a high-quality animation with a transparent background.

  • Is APNG lossy or lossless?
  • The simple answer is that PNGs offer lossless compression and JPEG files don't. This means, unlike JPEGs, PNGs don't lose any of their image data when they're compressed. On the flipside, lossless compression tends to make PNGs much bigger files than JPEGs, so they require more storage space.

  • Is APNG smaller than GIF?
  • GIF and APNG are both lossless, but apng tend to be smaller, and better quality (more colors, and the ability for transparency) Unfortunately apng are largely unsupported, but that may change.

  • What is APNG suitable for?
  • APNG files support 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency. APNG is backward compatible with non-animated GIF files. APNG files use the same . png extension and can be opened by applications such as Mozilla Firefox, Chrome with APNG support, iMessage apps for iOS 10.

  • What if my conversion gets stuck till long time?
  • You should check it again by refreshing the browser. If progress of the record doesn't get changes, you should try again with new job.
